Chinese Woman Keeps Healthy by Eating Dirt

Fan Qianrong says she has stayed healthy for more than 40 years by eating soil. The 48-year-old resident of the Qingquan village of Shijiazhuang city in China's Hebei province gathers clods of clay for her dirt diet-and she is not alone.
Three years ago, a young woman from China's Inner Mongolia made news when she told the media how much she loved munching on dirt.
Although this may sound a bit crazy, medical professionals have told ABC News that certain kinds of mineral-packed soil might provide diners with health benefits. In rural regions of African and India, pregnant women consume calcium-loaded kinds of clay thought to combat morning sickness, The Guardian notes.
For me, this dirt diet is very bizarre and imagining it makes me sick.

  1. I am fascinated and disturbed that people will eat dirt for nutritional value. I wonder if doctor's will start prescribing it to patients.

  3. This is not at all a far fetched idea. In this country, we package and sell tiny little pills created with a combination of the essential nutrients the body needs to provide an array of different functions. Aside from being completely disgusting, what's the difference in getting them naturally from the earth. Especially in underdeveloped countries that don't exactly have a walgreens close enough to pick up their flinstones.

  4. I can't believe that in China women are eating dirt for dinner and not getting sick and in Africa pregnant women are eating it to fight back morning sickness. I would never want to eat dirt even if it prevented morning sickness or kept me slim. This is crazy.
