Giant Land Lobster

The Lord Howe Island phasmid (Dryocelus australis) was thought to be extinct after a shipwreck that brought rats onto Lord Howe island which killed off many species. This insect was so big it that it was coined the name 'land lobster' by commoners there. These insects were incapable of flight but grew up to about half a foot long and could run fast. In the 1960s, a rock climber happened to run across one of these insects (dead) as well as other people finding more all on the Balls Pyramid. Many attempts to find this phasmid alive failed, however, there is reason to believe that they are not extinct and can be living in this region.
