An emotion detector for babies

This article is about Japanese engineers that are working on building future baby monitors that can tell you why your baby is crying. It will tell you whether your baby is hungry, needs to be change, is tired, etc. The engineers use an approach that "uses statistical analysis of the frequency of the cries and the power function of the audio spectrum to classify different types of crying." They use recordings of cries from babies with genetic disorders to differentiate between pained cries and normal cries. So far they've received 100% success in that. In the future they plan to incorporate their technique into portable devices.

  1. Wow, this is a little ridiculous!! Now, we're too lazy to be real parents. I babysit for my 6 month old nephew quite often and I can honestly say that it isn't that difficult to figure why the baby is unhappy. Monitors that tell us why our babies are crying are just plain stupid. Soon, someone is gonna come out with an automatic diaper changer because parents don't want to change the baby's dirty diaper!! Ridiculous!!!

  2. I think that this article is very interesting and people will have mixed feelings about it. It might be a little ridiculous, but on the other hand I think it might be helpful to first-time parents(especially dads!!) who might never have been around crying babies. As we all know, babies can be quite handful, especially when they cry for a long period time.
