The Self-Medicating Food That Chimps Eat

Chimpanzees and humans both learn from older or more experienced chimps and humans. This article talks particularly about chimps and what they eat. Apparently the chimps in the wild choose to eat the less nutritious and palatable foods. Why do they do that? There is a reason behind this. They eat Antiaris toxicaria leaves because they prevent and get rid of tumors. They eat Cordia abyssinica pith which prevents malaria and is anti-bacterial. Ficus Capensis is also anti-bacterial. They eat Ficus natalensis bark which is anti-diarrheal, and ficus urceolaris leaves which is a de-worming agent. So chimps are even smarter than we thought. They are curing themselves of diseases that they do not even really know about by choosing certain foods to eat. They are self-medicating themselves and it is working.
