The Problem is Clear: The Water is Filthy

The Problem Is Clear: The Water Is Filthy

In this article it discusses the contamination in water in Seville, California. About 300 people populate this area and spend double the money on water a month because they cannot even use tap water fearing contamination. Areas such as, Seville, is an impoverished Latino agricultural community. The ground has too much chemical fertilizer, animal waste, pesticides, and other chemicals that eventually reach the tap water. Cases have shown foggy colored water from water fountains, and someone even found a rock in their water. The principal spends $100 - $500 a month on bottled water and kids are not allowed to use the water fountains to make sure the water the children are drinking is 100% safe. This money spent on bottled water per month could be spent on one new laptop instead if water as cleaner. An estimated 20 percent of small public water systems in Tulare County are unable to meet safe nitrate levels, according to a United Nations representative. These water conditions are being compared to third world country problems. These communities lack in backup systems financially. Fertilizers and other chemicals used on the cropland decades ago will still affect these areas for a couple years. In Fresno County the community was given 1.3 million dollars to make a treatment plant but the prices in water skyrocketed and it’s left unused. The state is now allocating 4 million dollars interim solutions like filters under sinks but it will take time for this and even temporary solutions. It’s something so simple in life taken away.
