Alcoholic Fly Larvae

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2012/11/121129130453.htm

Scientists did a study on fly larvae for a period of days of feeding the larvae alcohol-spiked food to see how they would react to growing and learning. The study itself showed results of the larvae actually growing at a normal rate as compared to fly larvae that were fed food without alcohol-spiked food. The larvae after a six day drinking binge were adapting to the alcohol and were starting to learn at the same rate as the larvae who were not fed alcohol-spiked food. The difference between the two though was that the alcohol fed larvae when held without alcohol could not learn the way they could when fed with alcohol-spiked food. The larvae were showing signs of withdrawal, just like humans would react from being held without alcohol after consuming so much in their life. You become dependent on it after a long period of time of consumption. The study shows the response of alcohol that can become addicting and can plague someone and has a very long evolutionary history.
