Many believe that different methods of eating the placenta
has health benefits. Women would eat the placenta “raw, cooked, or dried out,
pulverized, and encapsulated.” The benefits that were thought made possible
were for reducing pain, increase mother and child bonding, a quicker uterine
recovery, aid to avoid postpartum depression, sleep disorders, and mental disorders.
The researchers of the writing in Achieves of Women’s Mental Health, went over 10
studies. The studies included four humans, six animals; one of the studies has
one positive outcome. This study used encapsulated placenta, and the result was
that there was more lactation. There was no other effect positive or negative
in any of the other studies.
Growing up in a Hispanic Culture, this has been around for quite some time now. Women would cook it in order to grow a bond with their child, if they didn't feel a connection with the newborn. Personally, I would never even have the thought of eating my placenta, yes I understand its made in my own body, but I also know that there is bacteria and other substances that I probably shouldn't eat.
